Environment in a Larger Context

International Trade Agreements [click here to read question twenty-seven]

"I have opposed recent trade agreements – including the Central American Free Trade Agreement – because they contained inadequate labor and environmental standards. Our trade policy should not reward exploitation of people or low environmental standards. I support making environmental provisions as enforceable as other provisions in trade deals including a prohibition on trade in illegal logging. I also believe that Congress needs to reassert its constitutional role in developing a sound and balance trade policy."

Federal Pre-emption of State Laws [click here to read question twenty-eight]

"Yes, I support allowing states to enact stronger environmental and public health standards. There are particular instances where a state must take action – such as the progressive fight against global warming being fought in the State of California - to protect the health and welfare of its citizens."

World Population [click here to read question twenty-nine]

"I support family planning assistance. U.S. support for family planning programs worldwide is critical to protect the health and well-being of women and children. In far too many locations, all over the world, women would be denied vital healthcare services without the assistance of internationally-funded programs. The Bush administration has not given adequate support to family planning initiatives and programs, and it is high time that we show leadership on this issue."

National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) [click here to read question thirty]

"I support the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) as I believe that compliance with applicable environmental laws is important. Whether a project has a detrimental impact on the environment should be considered in the decision making process."
