Environment in a Larger Context

International Trade Agreements [click here to read question twenty-seven]

"We need better environmental protections built into our trade agreements, and I have pushed for them. One of the reasons that I voted against CAFTA, for example, is that there was a lack of parity between the enforcement of commercial and environmental provisions, undermining the environmental protections. In addition, the environmental conservation provisions of CAFTA lacked funding commitments. As President I will pursue stronger environmental standards in trade agreements."

Federal Pre-emption of State Laws [click here to read question twenty-eight]

"We need strong federal environmental protections and we need to guard states’ abilities to set more stringent standards. Our federal environmental laws provide for both goals, and I support continuing this framework."

World Population [click here to read question twenty-nine]

"Yes, I have been a strong supporter of international family planning throughout my career. I believe all women, especially those in developing nations, need and deserve the opportunity to make the reproductive health decisions that are right for them, including determining when to bear children. Research shows that when women have access to contraception, they are more likely to space their births, have fewer children overall, and to be self-sufficient. They and their children are also more likely to be physically healthy. I believe controlling one’s reproductive health is essential to human dignity, and as president I will continue to support international family planning programs."

National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) [click here to read question thiry]

"We ought to evaluate the environmental impacts of federal projects and decisions, as NEPA provides for. I’m a strong supporter of this bedrock environmental law."
