NATURAL HERITAGE

Oceans: Marine Life [click here to read question nineteen]

"America’s oceans are a tremendous and beautiful resource, and it is our solemn responsibility to protect them for future generations. Responsible leadership, whether in business or government, requires a willingness to make investments that are costly in the short term but deliver worthwhile benefits in the long run."

Oceans: Offshore Drilling [click here to read question twenty]

"Yes."

Endangered Species Act [click here to read question twenty-one]

"Yes."

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge [click here to read question twenty-two]

"I strongly reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge because it would irreversibly damage a protected national wildlife refuge without creating sufficient oil supplies to meaningfully affect the global market price or have a discernable impact on U.S. energy security. We should be cherishing our natural treasures, not defiling them for no good reason."

National Forest Roadless Areas [click here to read question twenty-three]

"Road construction in national forests can harm fish and wildlife habitats while polluting local lakes, rivers, and streams. The Roadless Area Conservation Rule—which was made on the basis of extensive citizen input—protects 58.5 million acres of national forest from such harmful building. I will be proud to support and defend it."

Mining[click here to read question twenty-four]

"The mining industry plays an important role in the economies of many Western states and helps to provide our country with a supply of important minerals. However, mining has significant environmental implications that we need to take into account. Moreover, current law does not require the industry to pay royalties on benefits that arise from using publicly owned resources. We need to update the Mining Law of 1872 to improve environmental protection and require reasonable compensation for the use of federal land while taking into account the effect of new regulations on this important industry."
